Role – Senior/Principal Ecologist
Location – Greater Manchester
Salary – £38 - £45K
Our client is a UK-based environmental consultancy that offers specialist services in sustainability, planning, and environmental management. Operating nationwide, they support large-scale projects in infrastructure, energy, and property, providing expertise in ecological surveys, impact assessments, and noise monitoring. The consultancy is recognized for delivering sustainable solutions and holds B Corp certification, reflecting its dedication to environmental and social responsibility
They are looking for a Senior/Principal Ecologist who will play a key role in leading and managing ecological projects, providing expert advice on biodiversity, habitat management, and environmental legislation. The position involves working on a wide range of projects, from large-scale infrastructure developments to habitat restoration and conservation initiatives. The Principal Ecologist will lead a team of ecologists, ensuring high standards of delivery and contributing to the company’s reputation for environmental stewardship.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the design, implementation, and management of ecological surveys, assessments, and mitigation strategies for projects across various sectors
- Provides expert ecological advice to clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary project teams, ensuring compliance with UK environmental legislation and best practices
- Oversee the preparation of technical reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), and biodiversity management plans
- Manage and mentor a team of ecologists, ensuring their professional development and fostering a collaborative working environment
- Act as the main point of contact for clients and regulatory bodies, maintaining strong professional relationships
- Ensure that all ecological work complies with relevant health and safety standards and environmental regulations
- Develop and implements strategies to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainability in project designs
SENIOR/PRINCIPAL ECOLOGIST QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
- Extensive experience in leading ecological projects
- In-depth knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, policy, and best practices
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience mentoring junior ecologists
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, with excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Demonstrated expertise in producing high-quality ecological reports and delivering practical solutions for biodiversity challenges
- Proficiency in using ecological survey tools and software (e.g., GIS) is an advantage.
- A valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites
